NFC South Roundup

Atlanta Falcons

The Falcons took a step backwards in 2005, with the three games they lost to close out the year equivalent to the drop in wins from 2004. Michael Vick's big mission last season was to prove to the football world that he wasn't a "running" quarterback, but rather just a quarterback. He failed in the eyes of many at that task, compiling a weak 73.1 quarterback rating and a lousy touchdown/interception ratio (15/13). The team established itself as a force in the running game, but they still lack a go-to receiver. Defensively, there were a number of standout performers, such as Demorrio Williams and Patrick Kerney, but there are still plenty of holes to fill.

Atlanta will probably be looking for a wide receiver in free agency. Look for them to go hard after the top name that makes it to the market, be it Antwaan Randle El, David Givens, Reggie Wayne, or someone else. A veteran might be brought in if they decide to focus their energies on youngsters Roddy White and Michael Jenkins. In that case, Eric Moulds is a possibility. They may also make an effort to bring in a mid-level defensive end and possibly a safety.

The draft, however, is most likely where Atlanta will address the defense. A.J. Hawk would be a dream pickup, and they could possibly trade up for him. However, a defensive end is more likely at fifteen. Penn State's Tamba Hali and Boston College's Mathias Kiwanuka are possibilities, as is Louisville standout Elvis Dumervil.

Carolina Panthers

They were so close yet so far. Jake Delhomme went into he NFC Championship as the highest rated playoff passer ever and left with a three in his interceptions column. Still, this team is extremely talented with the likes of Steve Smith, DeShaun Foster, and Dan Morgan. In addition, John Fox and his staff are among the best in the game today. This is a team that wasn't far from the top in 2005 and shouldn't drop off in 2006.

One place they may look in free agency is at tight end. Kris Mangum is nowhere close to the receiver that would be perfect as a safety valve for Delhomme. Matt Schobel would be a great pickup in that role, as would former Cleveland tight end Billy Miller. They may also seek depth in the defense, most likely at tackle, where Brenston Buckner and Kris Jenkins both missed significant time due to injury.

The defensive depth will also be addressed in the draft. Possible picks in the first round include Jon Joseph, Devin Hester, or Ernie Sims. They will probably seek out a defensive tackle as well, possibly in the form of Dusty Dvoracek or Orien Harris. Depth along the offensive line may be addressed in the second day.

New Orleans Saints

This team went through the kind of season you wouldn't wish on anybody. After losing their homes, their community, and their way of life, they were expected to go out and compete on the football field. However, without a home stadium, that was incredibly difficult. Being forced to split their home games between Baton Rouge and San Antonio, along with the "home game" at the Meadowlands, they struggled to three wins, which cost Jim Haslett his job. Now, Bill Parcells understudy Sean Payton will be expected to take the team back to respectability which will be no easy task. While we all wish these players and their families the best, we're not expecting much on the field.

Getting a free agent to come to New Orleans won't be easy. Assuming they can, there are plenty of holes to fill. Depth is needed at every position. The major need is at linebacker, where Colby Bockwoldt's 89 tackles led the team. Nick Griesen and Tommy Polley are potential targets, assuming the team doesn't focus all of it's attention on wooing Julian Peterson.

With the second pick in the draft, it seems to be a foregone conclusion that the selection will either be Texas' Vince Young or USC's Matt Leinart. As always, trading down is a possibility as both of those players are highly coveted by teams searching for their franchise quarterback. If not, Leinart would be a great fit in the system, being able to work with star Joe Horn and the enigmatic Donte' Stallworth, who always seems poised for the big season that never comes. If they decide to trade down, it won't be past six or seven, where A.J. Hawk will be waiting.

Tampa Bay Bucs

After a poor season in 2004, the Bucs came out rolling in 2005. Cadillac Williams proved he was worth the fifth overall pick with a rookie of the year performance. Chris Simms, while not dominant, showed enough potential to provoke intrigue as to how he will follow it up. The defense remained the monster that it has been since the Tony Dungy era, with studs Simeon Rice and Derrick Brooks leading the way again. This team could easily improve upon it's eleven wins next season.

There are two major areas of concern here. One is the lack of experience at quarterback, and the other is tight end. As far as quarterback, they should look for a player who won't demand the big bucks but can push the trio of Simms, Tim Rattay, and Luke McCown. Charlie Batch could be brought into the fold, as could Jamie Martin. At tight end, Anthony Becht was a huge disappointment, averaging a catch a game, and Alex Smith tailed off after his big first game in which he caught two touchdowns. Brandon Manumaleuna and Matt Schobel might be targeted.

Tight end is also a possible draft choice. At 23, they will have a shot at no fewer than one of the "big three" tight ends: Marcedes Lewis of UCLA, Vernon Davis of Maryland, and Leonard Pope of Georgia. Notre Dame's Anthony Fasano should also be availabe in the third or fourth round. Offensive line is also a possible pick here. If Eric Winston's knee scares off some other teams, Tampa may take a gamble on him. Winston Justice would be a safer pick and is also a possibility.
