NFC South Roundup

Indianapolis Colts

The loss of running back Edgerrin James is imminent, the Colts are almost certain to use the franchise tag on receiver Reggie Wayne. There are a few good backs both in free agency and the draft that are most certainly itching to ride shotgun with Peyton Manning. Head coach Tony Dungy will return next season. Dungy's playoff failures are well notarized, but you can not argue with his season winning percentage or with the success of the cover-2 scheme that Dungy helped make popular. Dungy has helped rein in Manning a little bit from when he first came into the league, morphing him from young gunslinger to Zeus with a football. Eight Colts players were selected to the Pro Bowl, Manning, James, Marvin Harrison, center Jeff Saturday, tackle Tarik Glenn, Dwight Freeney, linebacker Cato June, and safety Bob Sanders. That, folks, is talent.

Jacksonville Jaguars

Status quo in Jacksonville, but who can argue with that, no need for any real changes yet. This team is going places, and is going to give Indy a run for their money next season. The Jags have re-signed defensive tackle Tony Williams, and gave center Dennis Norman a contract extension. Receiver Reggie Williams has settled his drug charges and will perform community service. The Jags have cap money and may spend some dollars this summer, they may only be a piece or two away from taking the division, if not more.

Houston Texans

Gary Kubiak has pieced together his staff, assembling what looks like a very smart and creative offensive staff. David Carr has received a three-year contract extension, this means the Texans may lean away from taking Texas quarterback Vince Young, and opt instead for RB Reggie Bush. I have said it before: the Texans need to draft D'Brickshaw Ferguson. Drafting Bush is a mistake. They need some new guys up front. The team may need to move away from the 3-4 defense, many of their current players might be better suited to the 4-3. The Texans do boast a talented secondary, but it's constantly under fire as the team isin't getting any pass rush. Former Packers head coach Mike Sherman is considering a position with the team, giving Carr another brilliant offensive mind and excellent teacher to try to take him to the next level. Sticking with Carr may be what's best in the long run for the franchise.

Tennessee Titans

The Titans are bidding time until they can start purging more off their cap. Steve McNair wants his contract worked out soon, which would save the team a fair chunk of change, and they must also decide who they will be able to afford to keep from their already depleted roster. Running back Travis Henry will be released, as could be lineman Brad Hopkins and Benji Olsen. Center Jason Hartwig is a free agent, as is defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch who is going to the Pro Bowl and safety Tank Williams. Another season looks bleak in Music City.
