Warner Resigns with Arizona |
||
Warner, a former NFL MVP, started 10 games for Arizona last season and completed 242 of his 375 passes for 2,713 yards, 11 touchdowns and nine interceptions. His 85.8 passer rating was the best for the franchise since Neil Lomax (86.7) in 1988 and his 64.5% completion percentage set a new team record. The 34-year old veteran rose to fame in the NFL in a very unconventional manner. After graduating from Northern Iowa, Warner polished his skills in both the Arena Football League and NFL Europe before getting a chance with the St. Louis Rams. Warner took advantage of an injury to Trent Green and became an almost overnight sensation with the Rams. The 6-foot-2, 219-pound signal caller was a three-time Pro Bowl selection, was named the league's Most Valuable Player in both 1999 and 2001 and was also selected as the MVP of Super Bowl XXXIV by leading the Rams to a thrilling win over the Tennessee Titans. A series of injuries curtailed his effectiveness in St. Louis and Warner moved on to New York to play for the Giants in 2004. The eight-year veteran started the first nine games for New York that season but gave way to the team's high-profile draft pick, Eli Manning. No longer in the Giants plans, Warner signed a one-year deal to play for Dennis Green in the desert. For his career, Warner has toiled in 73 games (69 starts) and passed for 19,214 yards and 119 touchdowns. His 65.7 completion percentage is the highest in NFL history and his quarterback rating of 94.1 is second in NFL lore to Steve Young's 96.8. |
